Agnes, we have worked a lot with Children’s Hospital – we did a couple of rounds of their social skills groups (which were helpful for a while) and we also did Occupational Therapy as well as working with all the school services.
Support groups are a bit tougher – there’s http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/maskas99/ – Mothers of Asperger Kids that I lurk on and occasionally ask advice.
We are just starting to work with an outside psychologist as well – so you might look into that.

Hello Mary-Frances. I see that your post it over a year old but I’m hoping that you continue to follow up on these posts. First of all I commend you for posting your story. Mine is very similar and me and my husband can sure use some support. Our son has been in Jeffco Schools since 1st grade. His school is awesome and his teachers have been great. My question to you is, what types of other support do you and your family have? Our son was diagnosed with Aspergers about 3 years ago and we are beginning to see more anger and behavioral issues. He is in his last year of elementary school and we are very anxious about his future. Do you have a support group that you attend? What about counseling for your son. We are at a loss. Thanks so much.

I am so happy to read your kids are doing so well in their new school environment.

You made wise decisions and I admire your approach to finding a great school.

My heart goes out to you and your son, in particular, because one of my boys has been the target of bullies. As he’s gotten older, it’s lessened. Plus now he has an awesome friend who truly has his back. And I smiled at the thought of your daughter checking lost and found because just yesterday, my 1st grader rescued an older brother’s coat from lost and found.

It’s great hearing your story, Mary-Frances! As you know, I did over a year of “research” for finding a school, and this was before Kindergarten! My daughter will jump in with both feet in the fall, and I’m so excited to see how things work out for us.

It’s so true what you said about the “feeling” you got from the school. There were a couple on our list that just “felt” right. There were some that didn’t. It’s amazing how that works…

Well, honestly all you can do is TRY to make the best decisions, it’s all we can do. Sometimes I think it’s overwhelming to have so many choices. On the other hand, I’d hate to be “trapped” somewhere with my kids as well.

Bullying is one of the toughest things, I think having a friend is essential and that just wasn’t falling into place for him – I think it will (and it already has) where he is now.

Ha ha on the lost and found! gotta love good siblings!
